Australia’s Solar Sunshot Program: What It Means for the Industry

25 Apr 2025

What is Solar Sun Shot program?

In a game-changing move for the renewable energy sector, the Australian federal government has announced a $1 billion initiative to supercharge domestic solar panel manufacturing. This landmark investment is designed to reduce Australia's reliance on imported solar panels—particularly from China—by strengthening local manufacturing capabilities. It positions Australia as a global leader in clean energy, while opening new doors for solar professionals, innovators, and businesses across the renewable energy sector.
Here’s why it matters to the Solar Industry

What This Means for Solar Professionals

The boost in local manufacturing comes at a time when demand for high-quality, compliant, and efficient solar systems is surging. Here’s how the initiative directly benefits Australian solar workforce:

  • Job Creation & Skill Development: Thousands of new jobs are expected in engineering, manufacturing, quality control, and logistics.

  • Faster Supply Chains: Shorter lead times for equipment and components mean quicker project turnaround times.

  • Enhanced Local Support: With production happening onshore, solar professionals will have more control, flexibility, and transparency throughout the procurement process.

  • Increased Standards Compliance: Locally produced systems are more likely to be built with AS 4777 and other Australian standards in mind, ensuring easier grid integration

  • Support Net-Zero Goals: Contribute to Australia's target of achieving 82% renewable energy in the national grid by 2030.

Recent Developments on Sun Shot Program

  • Program Launch: On August 31, 2024, the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) opened the first phase of the Solar SunShot program, initiating two funding rounds totaling $550 million.

  • Round 1A: Allocates $500 million to support solar PV manufacturing innovation, focusing on modules, inputs to modules (e.g., solar glass and frames), and deployment systems. Australian Renewable Energy Agency

  • Round 1B: Provides $50 million for solar PV manufacturing studies, including feasibility and engineering assessments.

Application Timeline

Round 1A

  • Expression of Interest Due: December 10, 2024

  • Full Applications Due: April 30, 2025

Round 1B

  • Full Applications Due: November 12, 2025

Way Ahead: Building a Self-Reliant Solar Future

The $1 billion solar manufacturing fund is not just a stimulus—it’s a signal. Australia is ready to lead in solar innovation, manufacturing, and deployment. By fostering local talent and industry collaboration, Australian Solar Industry is one step closer to an energy-independent future.
